TL; DR
- YouTube will display 30-second non-skippable ads to those streaming on smart TVs.
- The company will also display ads while pausing videos.
- YouTube says its top content now reaches over 70% of impressions on TV.
YouTube is adding longer, non-skippable ads to the platform for users who stream videos on a big screen. At the YouTube Brandcast event in New York on Wednesday, the company made two important points ads This will affect people who watch YouTube on smart TVs.
First, YouTube will add 30-second non-skippable ads to your top-performing content. The platform categorizes these videos under its YouTube Select umbrella.
“YouTube Select now reaches over 70% of impressions on TV, so we’re making it easier for you to use the assets in front of your most streamed content,” YouTube Marketers said in a blog post.
So instead of watching two 15-second ads in a row, viewers will now see a 30-second long ad that they can’t get away from.
Second, the platform is also bringing Pause Ads to YouTube on Smart TVs. These ads will appear when viewers pause the video while broadcasting. The video you’re watching will shrink and an ad will appear next to it.
It seems that the only way to avoid these new types of ads on YouTube on connected TVs is to get a YouTube Premium subscription.
