Seth Rollins defeated Drew McIntyre in an excellent opening match at WWE Crown Jewel 2023. In an impressive debut of Byron Saxton’s in-ring announce career, Rollins and McIntyre lived up to their lofty introductions with an entertaining back-and-forth match. The Saudi crowd was very excited about the contest, and leaned hard into McIntyre’s corner.
Following McIntyre’s loss, the WWE commentary team suggested that Drew McIntyre might consider joining Judgment Day to finally regain the World Championship. Backstage, Rhea Ripley smiled at a depressed McIntyre, as if to say, “I told you so.” After the match, Damian Priest attempted to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase, but Sami Zayn snatched the briefcase and fled into the crowd.
McIntyre was the favorite of the Saudi audience at the Muhammad Abdo Theater. Clearly hungry for a title change, fans cheered McIntyre throughout the match while booing Rollins at times.
In Drew McIntyre, Seth Rollins met the most believable superstar to dethrone him for the WWE Universal Championship. Rollins was just that -500 favorites on McIntyre, compared to Reigns’ insurmountable -5000 streak.
WWE has excelled at telling the story of Drew McIntyre’s slow transformation. Like any heel, McIntyre was justified in his actions but acted out in an unlikable way. McIntyre continues to suffer from being a victim of the pandemic and the dynasty. Although almost every major WWE Superstar could make the same claim, arguably no has fallen victim to the pandemic and the dynasty more than Drew McIntyre.
And McIntyre makes sure you’re aware.
McIntyre’s increasingly salty promos are reminiscent of Bret Hart’s heel turn in 1997, one of the most effective turns in modern wrestling. McIntyre continues to be wronged, and with no one lifting a finger to help him, he becomes cynical and bitter. This refreshing character added some much-needed depth to McIntyre, who has largely faltered since his loss to Reigns at Clash in the Castle. What was once a helpless downward spiral for McIntyre is now a compelling one.
As Drew McIntyre grows darker, WWE continues to question the possibility of McIntyre joining The Bloodline. Damien Priest continues the tension with Judgment Day. Assuming Rollins gets another shot at the World Championship, Drew McIntyre as World Champion could pave the way for Money in the Bank winner Priest at Judgment Day.
WWE Raw has been stagnant in recent weeks and needs a change. Drew McIntyre could have turned heel and won the WWE Universal Championship and that’s a change. But with WWE announcing McIntyre’s alliance with Doomsday, change could be on his way.
