October 13, 1993 Netherlands-England in the deciding match for a place in the 1994 World Cup in the USA. On the day, Koeman made a big mistake when he caught David Platt on the edge of the penalty area. But the match referee Karl-Joseph Assenmacher (German referee) did not award the penalty. A free kick, a yellow card.
In the minds of English supporters, the move hastened their selection’s defeat, especially since Bergkamp’s second goal as the Netherlands won 2–0 since Koeman opened the scoring in the game. The game was a major blow for England as the setback prevented them from qualifying for the 1994 World Cup and coach Graham Taylor resigned a few days later.
