- The 68-year-old The View host faced scrutiny after she uploaded a video of herself cooking
- Some people felt her method was unsafe, while others said it was unhealthy
- She responded to the backlash by posting a rude video addressing her haters
Whoopi Goldberg responded by clapping back at trolls who criticized her for the way she prepared her Thanksgiving turkey.
The popular talk show host, 68, faced intense online scrutiny after she uploaded a video of herself and a friend preparing to cook “her mother’s famous turkey” to Instagram on Wednesday evening.
The photo showed them stuffing the inside of the bird with various spices and ingredients, but when some people noticed that none of them were wearing gloves, it sparked an onslaught of negative comments.
The TV legend was also criticized after she revealed she planned to cook the dish by roasting it for 12 hours in the oven at just 200 degrees, with many netizens wondering if it is safe to cook meat at such a low temperature.
“It’s Thanksgiving night and I’m making my mom’s famous turkey.” “We’re doing our best to get it ready to put it in the oven at nine o’clock tonight,” she said.
“We will feed her until nine in the morning.” Set the oven at 200 degrees.
Basting is a method that involves cooking a piece of meat in a liquid and constantly pouring the juice from the bottom of the dish to the top to help it cook.
Whoopi, who spent the holiday in Italy, explained that… Other members of her family took turns basting the turkey throughout the night.
“We reserve.” [the heat] “On a low level so she has a chance to absorb all of this stuff,” she added.
But the comments section of the video quickly filled with negative messages.
“Cooking at 200 degrees?” Wouldn’t the temperature be too low to cook the turkey at? one person wrote.
Another person simply commented: “Gloves?” While another user added: “I hope he washed his hands.”
Whoopi seemed unamused by the backlash and posted a second video addressing her haters.
“I’m taking a moment out of my cooking time to come in and respond to some of you because you’re asking me all kinds of questions, some of which I feel like you should know the answer to,” The View alum said.
“Yes, he washed his hands.” Everyone in the kitchen washed their hands. do you know why? Because no one wants to touch anything with dirty hands. She added sarcastically: “We are like this, we are strange.”
‘[As for] Why wasn’t he wearing gloves, because we’re home and I didn’t buy gloves. Sometimes non-glove related events occur.
Whoopi insisted that her process is safe because she will be cooking it for a long period of time.
“When you do it at 200 degrees, and you do it slowly and you season it, you don’t have to worry about things like salmonella,” she continued.
“If I just stuffed it and ate it two hours later, I probably wouldn’t do it, but if you’re going to do what I do, which is take it all night, this is how you’re going to do it.” You won’t get sick of this turkey.
“And by the way, this is how my mom did it when I was little. I would wake up to the house smelling like turkey.
“It’s important that it takes the amount of time it takes for the house to smell good.”
Finally, the star said she’s definitely not a cooking expert, but a Thanksgiving turkey is the only thing she knows how to make.
“I don’t cook, maybe that’s why I’m not married,” she joked. “This is the only thing I can cook.”
“I can cook the turkey that my mother cooked for me, and nothing makes me happier because it brings me closer to my older brother Clyde and to my mother and my grandmother.
“Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I hope you have a good time cooking the turkey I know I can do. Everything else is questionable.”
Cooking a turkey at 200 degrees overnight may not be the traditional approach, but experts advise against it. In fact, William Sonoma listed it as one of his recommended routes.
While many criticized her, other online users were quick to defend her.
“How about during this time of Thanksgiving we all stop making snarky comments and be thankful for Whoopi?” one supporter wrote.
“Yes, Whoopi keeps those sacred traditions.” “I want to wake up to the smell of turkey filling the house with love,” read another comment.
A third user said: “You don’t tell a 68-year-old woman how to cook.” Lack of respect.
Another person commented, “People should realize we never cooked with gloves in the past.”
“This is a new age thing.” We just made sure to wash our hands constantly.
Whoopi posted a final clip discussing the topic next. “My dears, my dears,” she said, “why are you so hung up on this glove?” There are no gloves in my kitchen.
“We wash our hands, and we are not contaminated with dirt.” I don’t know what kind of people you know, but we wash our hands at home. Don’t worry about it, I swear to God it’s okay.
She also shared some shots of herself trying out the finished product on Thursday.
Whoopi, who was wearing a red and black plaid jacket over a blue button-down shirt and dark jeans, stood next to a golden brown bird.
She took a spoonful of the filling and dipped it in the liquid that had accumulated at the bottom of the tray before putting it in her mouth with a cheerful smile on her face.
“Yum,” she said.
