Wigmans On Thursday, it announced the closure of one of its largest stores in the United States
The grocery store located in Natick, Massachusetts at 1245 Worcester Street will close later this summer.
The site, which is 134,000 square feet and is multi-level, employs 365 people. Of these, 142 work full-time and 223 work part-time.
It opened in Natick Mall in 2018, but has been unable to secure enough customer base to keep the store afloat. The store was the supermarket chain’s first multi-level store within a major shopping mall.
“Unfortunately, with such an unconventional location, we cannot attract enough clients for our business model to work.” Wegmans New England Human Resources Director Brian McKendrick said.
A closing date has not been announced at the store, but all affected employees are being offered jobs at Wegmans’ other Massachusetts locations.
The company has no plans to close more stores, yet. It operates five other Wegmans in the Greater Boston area, including Medford, Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Westwood, and Northborough.
There are about 110 Wegmans locations across the East Coast, including nine in New Jersey.
