US attorney general makes surprise visit to Ukraine, pledges ‘steadfast support’

Ukrainian officials have reported an escalation of Russian bombing around the northeastern city of Kharkiv in the past 24 hours, as the evacuation of citizens from territories occupied by Russian forces continues.

“Within 24 hours, the occupiers fired at the Kievsky, Industrial, Saltyevsky and Nemishliansky districts of Kharkiv,” said the head of the Kharkiv Military Administration Ole Sinihopov in his official Telegram channel.

The CNN team in the Kharkiv region heard explosions at a distance of about 11 pm local time (4 am ET), and later confirmed that they were coming from the educational institution that Syniehubov – a university – mentioned when it was bombed.

According to Sinihopov, three civilians were killed and seven wounded in the past 24 hours.

Sinihopov added that Ukrainian forces on the line of contact repelled attacks in the area around Izyum while Russia maintained its defensive posture around Kharkiv in an attempt to block Ukraine’s advance.

The fighting ensued as 993 people, including 254 children, were evacuated from the temporarily occupied territories of the Kharkiv region, according to Sinihopov. More than 30 buses bound for Chuhuev and Kharkiv were used for evacuation.
