True Detective has been an action-packed ride since it debuted in 2014. In ten years, we will now have four seasons of the show. But so far, Season 4 is the best-reviewed entry yet, even higher than Season 1, with critics who watched early speaking highly of the series.
Season 4 of True Detective: Night Country starring Jodie Foster and Callie Reese Perfect critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, 100% with 19 reviews. Again, this is better than all the past seasons, even the much-loved first season. Here's how to put it together:
- True Detective – Season 1 – 91% critics, 86% audience
- True Detective – Season 2 – 47% critics, 19% audience
- True Detective – Season 3 – 84% critics, 48% audience
- True Detective Season 4 – Critics 100%
The shows are anthologies, but the drop in quality between seasons one and two specifically was somewhat legendary, and a huge disappointment to fans. Season 3 was much better, but fans haven't bite yet. Now, it remains to be seen what they think of True Detective: Night Country, which actually happened January 14, 2024 Release date, in just under two weeks.
Interestingly, this is the first season without Nick Pizzolatto writing or directing, although he is still producing. In fact, this season is directed, written and directed by award-winning Mexican director Issa Lopez. Clearly, things have gone well, at least with these early reviews. Pizzolatto previously said he had a “really wild” idea for season four, but ultimately abandoned it.
Everyone seems to be very into the idea of Jodie Foster leading the series this time around. Foster, an actress turned director, has slowed down her acting career in recent years, appearing in only four total projects over the past decade. She honestly hasn't been directing all that much either, having done five total episodes across four TV shows since 2014, and one movie, Money Monster, where ratings have been average at best.
Of course, Foster has previously played law enforcement in her legendary role in Silence of the Lambs, and it goes without saying that everyone is excited to see her back in a high-profile murder mystery like this. These early reviews suggest that this won't be another huge flop like Season 2, and that Issa Lopez has cooked up something worth watching. We'll find out for ourselves in a couple of weeks, and since it's an HBO classic, it will air weekly for six total episodes.
