Bored with English or simply need improvement? Language immersion in the heart of Occitania is provided by François Sillett and Richard Saunders, who recorded host families in the Nasel system.
Language stays to improve the English of teenagers and adults are becoming more common, but these stays can be expensive and complicated to organize, so the Nacelle organization, a specialist in language stays for more than 60 years, had the idea of providing language immersions in English-speaking families without leaving France. Families like François Sillett and Richard Saunders from England.
65 years ago, an English teacher noted that English had declined nationally. He had the idea of founding Go & Live: taking his students on trips to improve their situation: the company is divided into several companies, including Nessal, which offers accommodation with English-speaking families living in France. “Through our host families we immerse young people in English culture, they preserve the language and culture within their home and pass it on to the students who stay with them, and the students thrive. Myriam Vedrine develops a network of host families.
Language lover
In Occitania, before Covid, there were almost 50 families: now more than half take part in these language immersions.
The structure’s role consists of placing clients, which means connecting students who want to stay with host families. Miriam selects the family based on the student’s status, age and proximity to their location. To qualify for this immersion, the student must have passed the A2 level, college level. “I make sure that the student is compatible with their host family, I make sure that it is close to the parents, so that when they drop off the child they can talk to the host family and reassure them. Before, we give the student a placement test, we send a student who can communicate in English to a family who only knows a few words of English. Not going to send, we will support a bilingual family.Exemplifies Myriam.
Through the door, the scene is already set: an English-speaking atmosphere prevails in Françoise and Richard’s home. “I am of English descent, my mother lived in France, which makes me bilingual. In England I was a principal of a school, so I am used to interacting with young people”, François says. These families are selected based on strict criteria and are regularly checked to guarantee the safety and quality of education.
Seven years ago the two started being a part of the program, and about fifteen young people had the opportunity to learn alongside them. An immersion stay yes, but no vacation: at François and Richards, two hours of lessons in the morning and more fun activities in the afternoon but always in English. “In the morning I teach for two hours, and in the afternoon we do activities that appeal to every person we welcome. For example, we had a young man who played tennis, and we took him to do that and gave him vocabulary. His passion.” Teaching, but also culture, every Sunday it is “English Breakfast” or “Afternoon Tea” with the family.
Personal support
The host family has a supporting and listening role, apart from the educational role of the English language. This allows the young person to gain autonomy and above all gain self-confidence. For example, “I had a student who kept saying he couldn’t do anything, and after thinking about it, I realized he was dyslexic, so I told the parents, I was able to find a solution. A year later, this student came back. Stay with me, he has nothing to do with him, he Discovered ways to help you stay free! François testifies.
Note that these accommodations are aimed at adults who want to take tests or become bilingual. You need to calculate at least €1,000 per week for the youth rate.
