Behind the half-drawn curtain of a Shakespeare bookstore in Amirouch, Algiers, dozens of newly delivered collections are piled at the entrance. Inside the store, three young women open boxes and arrange their precious wares on shelves, all the while chatting, mostly in English.

The bookstore is aimed at all fans of English-speaking literature, with a wide range of genres from young adult fiction to science fiction to fantasy and the great classics.

“Before, we had two sections dedicated to topics in Arabic and French, but we removed them to save space because they didn’t appeal to anyone.” explains 25-year-old Rafiq Hanain, the founder and owner of the place.

A void to fill

The adventure began with a simple Facebook page in 2015 with the aim of filling a void in the Algerian market. In those days, books in English were hard to come by unless you ordered them online and from abroad.
