Apple's upcoming iPad Pro will likely feature a horizontal Face ID camera, according to code in iOS 17.4 discovered MacRumors Contributor Steve Moser.
“While setting up Face ID, iPad should be in landscape mode with the camera at the top of the screen,” the code reads.
With the 10th generation iPad, Apple moved the front camera to the side of the device so that it would be usable in landscape mode instead of portrait mode, and Apple appears to be making this change with future iPads as well.
The iPad Pro is the only iPad model with Face ID at the moment, so the icon indicates that Apple is moving the front camera from the top of the device to the side. However, Apple could add Face ID to the iPad Air, so it's possible that this change could also apply to that device.
Apple has long positioned the iPad Pro as a replacement for the Mac, and as a replacement for the Mac, it's often used in landscape orientation rather than portrait orientation, so moving the camera makes sense.
Rumors suggest that Apple will introduce new iPad Air and iPad Pro models as soon as April.
