There have been rumors of a PS5 Pro upgrade for some time, and analysts are certain it will arrive sometime later this year. The enhanced system is being described as the best place to play the highly anticipated GTA 6 game, which is scheduled to be released sometime next year. The new hardware is expected to complement the existing console, offering optional performance upgrades for those willing to invest in it, just like with the PS4 Pro.
“There seems to be a broad consensus in the gaming industry that Sony is already preparing to launch a PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024,” said Serkan Toto of Tokyo-based consultancy Kantan Games. “And Sony will want to make sure it has a great piece of hardware ready when GTA 6 is released in 2025, a launch that will be a huge boost to the entire gaming industry.”
There's been a lot of concern in the industry this week about PlayStation's financials. The Japanese giant was forced to revise its PS5 sales forecast, down from an ambitious 25 million units to 21 million, which, it should be noted, is still an unusually high figure. What's worse is that although its revenues have reached record numbers, its profit margins are becoming smaller and smaller, which has become a cause for concern for investors.
Whether or not the introduction of a new piece of hardware will help with that remains to be seen, though analysts don't expect any PS5 price cuts, meaning the upgraded model will likely come at a much higher cost than the current unit. It will be interesting to see what kind of features the PS5 Pro offers, and whether consumers consider it worth the upgrade.
