In previous years, the draft order was fixed in reverse order to the regular season order. As part of the players’ union efforts to reduce the incentive for non-competitive teams to lose matches, the recent collective bargaining agreement introduced a lottery to determine the six best overall picks. The odds of a team winning a higher selection were still weighted in favor of the clubs with the worst records, although the three worst teams all had identical chances of making it to the top. All 18 technically non-play-off teams were in contention for any of the six best picks, albeit with increasingly diminishing odds for clubs with better records. The 12 teams are ranked depending on the conclusion of the postseason, with team revenue sharing status separating teams eliminated in the same round.
This year, the Nationals, A’s, and Pirates had the best chance of securing the No. 1 overall pick. Each club has a probability of 16.5%. The Reds (13.25%) and Royals (10%) rounded out the top five as the only other teams with a 10% or better chance of getting a top pick. Other than Pittsburgh, the Twins were the biggest beneficiaries of the new system, entering the top five despite scoring the 13th worst. The Royals fell outside the top ten despite finishing fifth from bottom, while Oakland slipped from second worst to sixth.
The lottery takes effect only in the first round of the draft. From the second round onwards, the selection order is decided in reverse order to the previous season’s standings, apart from compensatory and competitive credit selections.
While the draft order is official, there is clearly a lot of uncertainty about which players will be at the top of the class. baseball america He updated his first Prospects 100 preliminary draft in October, with LSU right-handed Dylan CruzRight, Tennessee Chase Dolander and Ole Miss shortstop Jacob Gonzalez Among the most talented prospects. There will be a lot of action once the amateur baseball circuit kicks off next spring.
