A man has been rescued by the Coast Guard after he says he spent three days stranded on an uninhabited island after a sailboat broke down in the Bahamas.
Coast Guard crew Cutter Paul Clarke spotted the hapless sailor firing flares from his crippled vessel Friday near Cay Sal — a 2,000-square-mile stretch of land between Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas. The maritime agency said in a statement.
After locating the stranded navigator, a Miami Coast Guard aircrew HC-144 Ocean Sentry dropped supplies, including food, water, and radios to establish communications.
“The man told the crew that he had been stuck for three days after his ship became inoperative during his voyage,” the agency said.
Later, he was picked up by a Coast Guard cutter and taken to the Royal Bahamas Defense Force “in good health”.
The rescued man was not identified but was described as a 64-year-old Bahamas national.

“We are proud to have saved this man’s life,” said Petty Officer 3rd Petty Dave Craig, Coast Watcher Superintendent of the Key West Sector.
“This case is a great example of why you must have the proper safety equipment on board your ship. Without a flare sight, the case may not have resulted in a successful outcome.”
