If Jones, 26, returns before he is fully healthy, there will be an increased risk of another injury that would put him back at square one. Therefore, the Giants continue to take a cautious approach to his return. Over the past two weeks in practice, Jones has increased his scout team reps, a sign that his suspension is not currently under consideration. But until he was completely purified, that’s all he would do in training.
Giants coach Brian Daboll was asked last week if Jones’ injury could end the season.
“I don’t have a crystal ball as far as injuries go, but he’s improving and we’ll see where he is next week,” Daboll told reporters.
Jones previously suffered a neck injury in 2021, another disc issue that brought an early end to his season. Jones said the latest neck injury is not serious, and sources say it is not viewed as a long-term thing. However, the risk of further complications is not worth rushing it back.
The Giants signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract in March that pays him $46 million this season and $36 million in 2024, including $35.5 million fully guaranteed. Another $23 million is guaranteed for injury in 2025.
New York (2-5) scored a league-low 85 points in Sunday’s game against the rival Jets.
