With Blizzard appealing to fans of World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch, especially at BlizzCon 2023, some StarCraft fans are feeling left out.

BlizzCon 2023 is a celebration of all things Blizzard Entertainment. Or at least most things. While this year’s opening ceremony acknowledged much of Blizzard’s player base, it left a core group of players wondering if they had simply forgotten.

The cinematics at the opening ceremony began focusing on games like World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, Hearthstone, and even trying to promote the new mobile game Warcraft Rumble.

Blizzard Entertainment President Mike Ybarra was the first to take the stage, and immediately called on fans of various Blizzard games to make their voices heard. After getting responses from “Heroes of Overwatch, Adventurers of Sanctuary, and Defenders of Azeroth” in the crowd, one fan, who appeared to be left out, shouted out, “What about StarCraft?”

Fans were quick to address the lack of StarCraft references On a game subreddit with memes Which suggests that Blizzard has completely forgotten about the franchise.

“Guy literally mentions 3 out of 4 major Blizzard series and pretends the last one doesn’t exist,” one player wrote. “Sad moments.”

Others were more critical in a post titled, “Blizzcon doesn’t feel the same without Starcraft,” As one player explained that while WoW, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and Diablo took center stage, Starcraft, Warcraft, and Heroes of the Storm were “completely forgotten and abandoned.”

However, Starcraft fans may not lose all hope as Microsoft CEO Phil Spencer briefly mentioned StarCraft shortly after it appeared on stage.

“Throughout Blizzard’s history, they have pioneered and shaped so much across the gaming industry, and many of you here today have been part of that journey,” Spencer said after appearing on stage. “Think of Diablo – it pushed the action RPG genre forward. StarCraft generated the foundation for what eSports would eventually become, and StarCraft 2 was a major catalyst for the evolution of gaming as live entertainment.

Just mentioning the franchise was enough for some players. “When Phil Spencer mentioned Starcraft, it got a higher fan reaction than Diablo and Overwatch. There’s still some hope.” one fan pointed out.

But one The Redditor followed the community’s reaction to BlizzCon with a comment suggesting that fans shouldn’t expect any news about StarCraft this year anyway.

“I don’t know why you guys are doing this to yourselves. They haven’t mentioned anything about Starcraft in years, and I don’t know what made you think they were going to surprise everyone with the news this year. Don’t you think if they had a Starcraft announcement for the event they would tell us they had a Starcraft announcement before the event?

While there wasn’t anything for StarCraft fans at BlizzCon 2023, who knows what 2024 might have in store?
