Some mistakes are not repeated after the Destiny 2 season of the Deep

We’re nearing the end of Destiny 2’s Season of the Deep, and it looks like we’re heading into some kind of Savathun-themed season where we plan to revive it. Community sentiment hasn’t been particularly great this season, though a lot of that is down to bigger issues like a lack of PvP focus or mounting technical issues in the game.

However, I wanted to see the “lessons” learned from Season of the Deep’s bugs, and how Destiny 2 can use them moving forward. I didn’t mind this season as a whole, but I felt like it was kind of jumping off the deep end, no pun intended, the longer it goes.

Rescue was not necessary — It seems strange to think that “less content” might be on the list here, but Salvage felt completely unnecessary for this season. It was a strangely designed activity that seemed like it was trying to echo something like Menagerie, but the encounter design and enemy density made it very uninteresting and lots of waiting or shooting things running out of doorways. Legend Salvage is a good bullion farm but that’s about it.

Deep Dive Difficulty Convention – Absolutely love the idea of increasing the difficulty in deep diving as you progress. But having this ability in the basic match playlist where everyone has to agree three times in a row to increase the difficulty or else it wouldn’t have been good design. It seems like there should have been two completely separate modes for this.

Deep dive alien pumping mission – The task itself? great! Again, jamming a weird mission inside a matching activity where some players want to run it and some don’t? Honestly one of the most bizarre decisions I’ve ever seen. Again, this had to be absolutely its own example, whether it was a match or an LFG, and it should not have been integrated into the normal operations of Deep Dive.

Fishing should be a meme, nothing more – Fishing was a funny thing to apply for about the first couple of days. However, after that, we found out that it was the main place to obtain reclassified calculation weapons, and then three parts of a strange quest move, that was too far. Hunting just had to be a meme. Give it some physical rewards, unlock aquarium stuff, and hell, they should have even had a fishing title, but associating it with so many actual seasonal things was a mistake.

Trauma story – I think we should move on here. Every season of Destiny seems to focus on certain characters’ backstory and/or the trauma they have to overcome. Osiris deals with losing his light and being possessed. Haunted by Zavala, Crow and Kettle confront their demons. Rasputin’s death, Amanda’s death. Now here, Sloane deals with being stuck on Titan on her own. I like it, but it looks like this card has been played too many times at this point.

fit veil – I don’t know if this is technically a part of Deep, but that’s when it aired. This was easily the best story content of the season, hidden in a weekly radio message that 98% of the player base will never listen to. A confusing storytelling decision and waste of some really great plot developments.

In the end, there was a lot to like about Deep, despite all this. Deep Dive was originally a great idea held back by a lot of stuff crammed into it to ruin it. We had one of the best movie scenes in the history of Destiny. The shield is great. The dungeon was great. But I think there were some missteps here that should not be repeated in the future, and they played into the rejection of the season by many, I think.
