Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich He said on Wednesday he would sell Chelsea Football Club In England, a dramatic move came in response to outrage over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Abramovich at the same time announced that he had instructed the famous team to create a foundation that would use all proceeds from the sale of Chelsea “for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine”.
In a statement, Abramovich said: “As I have stated before, I have always made decisions with the club’s best interests at heart. In the current situation, I have made the decision to sell the club, as I believe this is in the best interests of the club, the fans, the staff, the club’s sponsors and its partners.”
The announcement of the sale came less than a week after the billionaire said he had transferred oversight of the club to trustees of a charity, and following calls that Abramovich faced sanctions from the United Kingdom.
Abramovich bought London-based Chelsea FC in 2003. During his tenure, Chelsea won the season’s titles in the Premier League, five times, and won the prestigious FA Cup the same number of times.
