Russian air defenses intercepted Ukrainian drones over four regions within its territory, including Moscow, a day after its attack on Kiev.
Russian air defenses intercepted Ukrainian drones over several areas within its territory, including Moscow, just one day after Kiev announced the “largest drone attack” on Ukraine since Moscow invaded the country in February last year.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Sunday that “the air defense destroyed four Ukrainian drones over the territory of the Bryansk, Smolensk and Tula regions.” Earlier, Russia said that some drones were shot down over the Moscow region.
The Russian army said it also shot down two Ukrainian missiles that were heading to Russia over the Sea of Azov between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Ukraine said its air defenses shot down eight of nine drones over the country on Sunday.
Ukraine said on Saturday that Moscow had launched 75 drones into the country, most of which targeted the capital.
The attack came as Kiev commemorated the Holodomor, the Soviet-orchestrated famine tragedy that killed millions of Ukrainians during Stalin’s rule.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as an act of “deliberate terrorism,” saying that “the Russian leadership is proud of the fact that it is capable of killing.”
Ukraine has been bombing Russian regions and the Crimean Peninsula, which it annexed, with drones for months, and launched a counter-attack this summer to repel Russian forces.
Russia annexed Crimea and supported separatists in eastern Ukraine after overthrowing the pro-Moscow government of President Viktor Yanukovych following a popular uprising in 2014.
