CHICAGO (CBS) – Riot Fest is set to return to Douglass Park in September, rather than moving the popular music festival to the suburbs as originally planned.
“We’re not just coming home, we’re coming back with passion, with greater purpose, and doubling down on our commitment to Chicago, our fans, and our community,” Riot Fest founder Michael “Riot Mike” Petrishin said in a statement. “Riot Fest was born and raised here; it’s where we belong.”
Petrichin said the decision to return to Douglas Park came after a conversation with Mayor Brandon Johnson.
Pending approval from the Chicago Park District Board of Directors at its meeting next month, Riot Fest will take place at Douglas Park from September 20 to 22. Headline artists include Fall Out Boy, Beck, Pavement and Slayer.
In June, Riot Fest organizers announced the initial event Move to SeatGeek Stadium in southwest suburban Bridgeview.Organizers even arranged shuttle buses to the suburban venue. In a YouTube video from June, Riot Fest organizers blamed the move on the Chicago Park District.
However, the park district announced Wednesday that the festival would return to Douglas Park instead and that they were working with Rep. Monique Scott (24) and city leaders on a long-term partnership to keep Riot Festival in Chicago.
“Independent and alternative cultural assets like Riot Fest energize our local economy by creating jobs, attracting tourism, supporting our youth, and providing a national stage for small businesses and artists from North Lawndale and Little Village,” Scott said in a statement. “The return of Riot Fest is a win for our community, and we look forward to the continued positive impact it will bring.”
As part of their permit to hold the festival at Douglas Park, Riot Fest will donate 10% of the festival’s proceeds to Douglas Park. The park district estimates that this year’s festival will generate approximately $712,000 for the park. Following the festival, the park district will work with the community on potential capital improvements to the park.
For years, Neighbours have complained about Douglas Park. About limited access to the park, damage to park grounds, traffic and noise next to two hospitals and a rehabilitation center.
Riot Fest began in 2005 as a multi-venue punk and rock festival in Chicago. From 2012 to 2014, Riot Fest was held in Humboldt Park, where some residents—then Ald. Roberto Maldonado (26)—He complained about the large crowds and the damage to the park.
