King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen consort, have arrived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland where Queen Elizabeth rests.
He is currently greeting members of the public standing behind the checkpoints.
Then the king attends the ceremony of the keys.
The King is traditionally welcomed into the city of Edinburgh,”[his] The Ancient and Hereditary Kingdom of Scotland”, by Lord Mayor of Edinburgh, Robert Aldridge – Civil Chief of the City. He will give Charles the keys to the city, according to the British monarchy’s website.
The gesture of presenting the keys is purely ceremonial, and the King is to be expected to reject it, with the words: “I return these keys, quite convinced that they cannot be put into better hands than those which the Lord and my counselors have placed in the good city of Edinburgh.”
The King will then walk behind the Queen’s coffin as it moves in procession from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to St Giles’ Cathedral.
