The Australian airline, nicknamed the “Flying Kangaroo”, has announced that the new route will begin on December 2, 2022 and will be serviced by Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Customers who continue to travel to other North American cities can contact Qantas’ partner American Airlines, which has a hub in DFW.
Although Qantas offers many long-haul flights to the United States, this is the first time in history that a commercial airline has organized a non-stop flight between Dallas and Melbourne.
“There has been no city in the world that has done this tougher during Covid than Melbourne, but no city is recovering so quickly,” Stephanie Tully, chief customer officer at Qantas Group, said in a press release.
“We’re seeing really strong demand from Melbourne residents wanting to go abroad for a vacation or a business trip after spending two years at home,” she added.
Australia began slowly reopening its borders to international travelers who were fully vaccinated in February.
The MEL-DFW direct route operates at about 17 hours, which will add it to the list of the longest flights in the world. Inaugural flight tickets are now on sale.
Currently, the world’s longest passenger flight operates between Singapore and JFK on Singapore Airlines. It covers 9,534 miles and spends about 18 hours in the air.
The Australian national carrier, which celebrated its 100th birthday in 2020, has made no secret of its desire to push the limits of long-distance travel.
During the pandemic, Qantas, like many airlines around the world, has innovated to stay afloat and keep employees employed.
