Police: A teacher was killed in a knife attack at a school in northern France

PARIS (Reuters) – A teacher was killed in a knife attack at a school in the northern French city of Arras on Friday, while another teacher and a school security guard were seriously injured, police said.

Regional authorities said the attacker had been arrested.

Police were unable to confirm local media reports that the attacker shouted “Allahu Akbar.”

BFM TV quoted a police source as saying that the attacker was about 20 years old and may have been a former student. She added that the attacker’s brother was also arrested.

BFM TV said that the dead man was a French language teacher, while a sports teacher was stabbed and injured.

She added that the students remained confined to their classrooms.

President Emmanuel Macron’s office said he was heading to Arras.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said that a police operation was taking place in a school, without providing further details.
