Phil Donahue, host of ‘The Phil Donahue Show’, dies at 88
Phil Donahue, host of “The Phil Donahue Show,” has died at the age of 88. He revolutionized daytime television with more than 6,000 episodes that focused on pressing social issues.
TV celebrities pay tribute to legendary broadcaster Phil Donahue.
After the death of former “Show host Phil Donahue” was confirmed Monday by a family spokesman, Oprah Winfrey honored him for paving the way for her success.
“There would be no Oprah without Phil Donahue, who proved that daytime talk and women-watching should be taken seriously,” Winfrey wrote on Instagram, posting a photo of the two of them together. “He was a pioneer. I’m glad I was able to thank him for that. Rest in peace, Phil.”
Donahue hosted his influential talk show, which included studio audience participation, from 1967 to 1996.
Winfrey previously said that while Donahue “may not have invented talking to people on television, he did it better than anyone who came before him,” and that “all of us who came after Phil Donahue owe him an enormous debt of gratitude.”

A family spokesman told USA Today that Donahue died after a long illness and was surrounded by family and his “beloved golden retriever, Charlie.”
