Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev for his first Grand Slam title on Sunday, but Djokovic's entire year has evaporated in the wreckage he left behind. The world number one was aiming to win his 25th Grand Slam title in Melbourne and will have more chances to claim that record, but the chance to make one last “Grand Slam” assault of all the Grand Slams and the Olympics in one match for the year is already over. With Sinner now firmly elevating himself above his peers alongside Carlos Alcaraz as a worthy contender for the biggest honors, Djokovic will know that the challenge of staying at the top is tougher than ever.

“I don't really know what to say. The confidence I've gained since the end of last year has kept the belief in my ability to play with the best players in the world. I'll go into Sunday smiling and do my best.”

“It was a very tough match. I started well for two sets and I felt like he wasn't feeling well on the court so I kept pushing. Then in the third set I had a match point and missed a forehand, but that's tennis. I tried to prepare for the next set. I was looking forward to it. On to this match: It's good to have these kind of players you can learn from. I learned a lot from Wimbledon (where Sinner lost to Djokovic in straight sets in the semi-finals).

Sinner was asked how he has now beaten Djokovic in three of the last four matches:

“I don't know – ask him! I think we play similarly. He's an amazing serve player but I tried to push him and move him all over the court, and I'm not going to tell you the tactics. I have a feeling I'll play a few more matches with him. It's a pleasure to be here.”
