The beloved former Lions running back has agreed to a three-year deal with the New Orleans Saints.
After the Detroit Lions agreed to terms to bring back David Montgomery, the writing was on the wall for free agent Jamal Williams. On Wednesday night, the inevitable became a reality. According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Williams signs a three-year deal with the New Orleans Saints.
Williams has been the emotional heart of the Lions over the past two seasons, showing what it means to be a tough and unapologetic worker. It eventually paid off in the regular season, as Williams achieved a career high with 1,066 rushing yards and set the Lions record with 17 rushing touchdowns.
The Lions and Williams had a mutual interest in returning to Detroit, however The latest reports indicated that the two sides were not close when it came to the terms of the contract. Ultimately, the Lions broke off negotiations and signed Montgomery to a three-year deal worth $18 million, including $11 million guaranteed.
So what did the Saints pay Williams?
$12 million for three years with an $8 million guarantee, According to Ian Rapoport.
In two seasons, Williams managed to quickly become a fan favorite in Detroit – just as he had done in Green Bay before. Hopefully Williams will be the best in New Orleans – with the sole exception of facing the Saints and Lions next year.
