The Detroit Lions are bringing back veteran Nate Sudfeld to augment their quarterback depth chart.
The Detroit Lions have finally made a move at their backup quarterback, and it feels familiar. The team announced Friday morning that they have RBack-up website last year quarterback Nate Sudfeld. The terms of the deal have not been announced.
Sudfeld was added at the end of the preseason after a Detroit camp fight between David Blough and Tim Boyle resulted in injuries to both players. Sudfeld will make just two appearances for the Lions in 2022, both of which are kneeling opportunities to finish.
This season, Lions general manager Brad Holmes said the Lions would be more focused on fixing the backup quarterback position, and in the process, gave Sudfeld a small compliment.
“We don’t have much behind[Jared Goff],” Holmes said. “We were kind of slipping home at the end of training camp trying to find a backup quarterback. (We were) able to get Nate Sudfeld, and (he) did a great job for us, but we have these open, transparent conversations about – we’re happy with. Jared, he’s our newbie, but we need to add some pieces in that room overall.”
Sudfeld brings the Lions’ offense recognition and veteran presence, as he now enters his eighth season of professional football. However, Holmes’ quote definitely seems to indicate that the Lions are planning to add more competition backup to the room this off-season. This likely means that you should expect to add another quarterback in the draft or later in free agency—maybe still both.
