Original story [Tue 9th Apr, 2024 05:45 BST]:
NetherRealm's new Mortal Kombat 1 is still releasing new fighters for the Kombat Pass, and the next fighters on the way have now been officially teased.
It's the returning fighter Ermac, and a gameplay video will follow later this week. The current teaser includes a short exchange between Kung Lao and Ermac. This same teaser also reveals Mavado – the next Kameo fighter coming to Mortal Kombat 1.
Ed Boon also provided a detailed history of Ermac and how the character was created. Get the full summary below:
Ed Boon: For over 30 years, we've been working on the first #MortalKombat game. The game program contains sections of code that should (in theory) never be accessed/executed. If this happens, it increments a counter that will log the error. We've also created a Game Audit screen where we can check this counter in the arcades.
To keep each record short, I wrote a wrapper macro that calls all the necessary functions in one line of code. The macro was called ERMAC…short for Error Macro.
Unfortunately or fortunately, we've listed the number of ERMACS that occurred right after the log/number of times players fought against REPTILE, who was a hidden fighter in the first Mortal Kombat game.
This (of course) made players speculate that ERMAC was another hidden character, like REPTILE. Rumors of ERMAC quickly became the stuff of legend as players insisted on fighting against him. They didn't.
In Mortal Kombat 2, we made REPTILE a playable fighter and added 3 new hidden fighters: Smoke, Jade, and Noob Saibot. But some players are still looking for Ermac.
For MK3, we decided to turn some myths into reality, starting with the animals. Finally in Ultimate MK3 (Running Out of Colors) we finally added ERMAC as a real fighter (Red Ninja) to the roster.
Over the years he has appeared in a number of MK games. Now he has a whole story/history and is part of MK lore.
We would never have guessed (as always) that this red ninja with a ridiculous name would end up such a big part of Mortal Kombat history and still be kicking ass for over 30 years! But here we are, as he's about to join the #MortalKombat1 trailer this week!
