Microsoft announces 9.99 Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock that connects via USB-C

Microsoft announces $299.99 Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock that connects via USB-C

Microsoft just has it Officially unveiled a Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock, hours after the device was leaked. At $299.99, the new Surface dock will connect via USB-C instead of the proprietary Surface Connect port. Microsoft plans to continue selling the Surface Dock 2, which is equipped with a Surface Connect port designed for Surface devices that don’t have USB-C or Thunderbolt 4.

The new Surface Thunderbolt 4 dock will support these non-Surface devices for the first time. You can connect to it via USB-C, and it supports data transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps and 96W charging thanks to Thunderbolt 4. On the front, there is a single USB-C port alongside a USB-A port but unfortunately no SD card slot. The back of the Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock contains two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, a 2.5Gb Ethernet port, an audio jack, and a security lock slot.

While this doesn’t spell out the direct end of the Surface Connect port, Microsoft is clearly headed in that direction. Recent Surface devices from Microsoft such as the Surface Laptop 5 and Surface Pro 9 ship with USB-C ports that support Thunderbolt 4 along with a proprietary Surface Connect port. It now seems likely that we’ll soon see the Surface drop the Surface Connect port in favor of USB-C only. Microsoft only shipped the Surface 3 with a Micro USB charging port, instead of the proprietary Surface Connect charging.

The new Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock will be available today from the online Microsoft Store, Priced at $299.99.
