AI-generated photos of Katy Perry and Rihanna at the Met Gala have gone viral on social media.
None of the singers were present at the event, but that did not prevent the spread of fake photos of them on X, formerly Twitter.
Perry shared two fake photos of herself on Instagram and revealed that her mother had been scammed.
One photo of the singer wearing a moss-trimmed pink dress has been viewed more than 13 million times on X.
The photo was first posted at the start of a red carpet event at the Museum of Modern Art in New York with the caption: “Katy Perry. This is it.”
Fans responded to Perry’s Instagram post admitting they had been fooled by the photo.
“I actually reposted this thinking it was true,” one fan said, while another wrote: “Wait, it was AI generated?! I was scammed.”
The Fireworks singer also shared a screenshot of a conversation with her mother who was fooled by the photo.
“Mom, the AI got you too, be careful!” Perry said in a message.
Another AI-powered photo of the singer, this time wearing a golden corset dress with a main shield on the red carpet, also went viral, garnering more than 5 million views.
The dress fit the 2024 theme, The Garden of Time, a short story about a Count and Countess who pick flowers that reflect time.

Why does this matter? After all, this is the red carpet, not an election. Well, it tells us how AI-generated content is more compelling than ever before. They even managed to trick Katy Perry’s mother.
The warning signs are still there. A photographer is missing half of his head, his fingers are blurred on the other — and the rug itself is from 2018. But it still looks like an improvement on some of the other AI-generated images that have gone viral.
And all of this could become more dangerous.
And how the Mayor of London’s AI-generated fake voice – which sounded like a secret recording – fanned the flames of offline comfort. She falsely suggested he was moving Memorial Day celebrations to accommodate a pro-Palestinian rally.
These tactics will be in effect across our social media channels in the coming months – so this is a reminder to put our social media sleuthing to the test.
The AI-generated image of Rihanna also received millions of views on social media. The photo shows her on the red carpet wearing an embroidered gown complete with animals and birds and a huge arm ring.
According to peopleThe 36-year-old was unable to participate in the event after contracting the flu.
At the beginning of the evening, fake photos of Dua Lipa spread, showing her wearing an off-the-shoulder corset dress with fringes and a bow. I showed her in a different place than the carpet.
A few hours later, the 28-year-old British-Albanian singer showed up at the party in a completely different outfit — an all-black embellished dress with dazzling belly chains, polka-dot mesh gloves, and a huge black feather boa on top. Her shoulder.
The annual charity event attracts celebrities and fashion heavyweights, and this year Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny join Vogue’s Anna Wintour as hosts.
The event raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and tickets are rumored to cost upwards of $70,000 (£56,000).
