This year’s Tony Awards are the first to honor shows that have opened after the long pandemic shutdown of theaters, and come as the industry is still struggling to recover from the damage the shutdown has caused.
“Lyman trilogyAn ambitious look at the rise and fall of the Lehman Brothers financial empire, it catapulted to the fore in the race for best play, and ‘Company’, a reverse-gender revival of a musical by Stephen Sondheim and George Forth, in the race for best musical revival.
A number of famous artists have also recorded nominations, including Sam Rockwell, Mary Louise Parker, Billy Crystal, Hugh Jackman, Uzo Aduba, Rachel Drach, Felicia Rashad, Ruth Negga and Patti Lupone. Among the candidates overlooked are: Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Benny Feldstein and Daniel Craig.
There were 34 eligible shows, of which 29 scored nominations. The nominations were chosen by a group of 29 people who watched all eligible shows and voted last Friday; Then, a group of 650 voters has until June 10 to vote for the nominees, and the winners will be announced at a ceremony on June 12.
