Yakuza from Japanese studio Ryu Ga Gotoku has been one of the most beloved franchises in recent years. A story that won players over with each new installment and gradually imposed itself on European and American territory. Thanks to this, we’ve seen the franchise’s latest games come with English voices, whereas previously they only came in Japanese.
But that will change in the next game, Like a Dragon: Isshin! The newly developed title will come to the West for the first time in 2023, but only with Japanese voices.
Like a dragon: Ishin! It wants to maintain the essence of Japan.
The reason, as explained by the developer, is to maintain the essence of the language spoken during the Edo period, the time the title was set. So, we won’t have voiceover in English or any other language, but at least we will have subtitles in English language.
For the new version of Ishin, we use subtitles. We don’t do voice over dubbing. We are working on translating the game into English, but the specialized vocabulary and the way people spoke in the Bakumatsu era would make the queues incredibly long, so it won’t work. So this time, we’re doing subtitles.
The reason seems quite logical, at least to our eyes. A logical reason lies in the essence of the language of the period in which it is represented. Of course, that doesn’t mean the franchise’s next games, which have already been announced like Like a Dragon 8 and Like a Dragon: The Man Erased His Name, won’t be dubbed in the West. Judging by the company’s recent results, this is likely to happen.
Like a dragon: Ishin! Coming to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and all other current platforms on February 21, 2023.
