A new report about the PS5 Pro has revealed alleged new information about the yet-to-be-announced console.
In an article about DealabsReliable PlayStation leaker billbil-kun says the final name for the mid-gen update is actually the PS5 Pro, posting a schematic of its design based on what he claims is the final packaging box for the new console.
The diagram above shows a similar console design to the current PS5 Slim, with white, two USB-C ports, and a power button on the front. But there are three black lines in the middle of the PS5 Pro’s outer shell that aren’t present on the base models. Bill Conn noted that the PS5 Pro appears to be slightly thicker than the PS5 Slim.
The PS5 Pro seen by billbill-kun does not include a disc drive. What is unclear is whether Sony is also planning to release a disc-drive version of the console. No price has been mentioned. The controller remains the base DualSense.
billbill-kun expects Sony to announce the PS5 Pro during the first half of September 2024. IGN has asked Sony for comment.
The PS5 Pro has been rumored for some time, with reports suggesting a November release. In March, alleged PS5 Pro specs leaked online, and IGN understands that the specs are legitimate. The main improvements relate to the CPU, which is said to be identical to the standard PS5 CPU but with a “high CPU frequency mode.” This is said to equate to a 10% boost to 3.85GHz. The GPU, on the other hand, is said to enable faster rendering and higher-quality ray tracing, powered by 33.5 teraflops. The standard PS5 offers 10.28 teraflops. However, a direct comparison between the PS5 and PS5 Pro would be around 10.28 versus 16-17 teraflops.
Particularly interesting is that the PS5 Pro has an upscaling/smoothing solution called PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling), a custom machine learning architecture, and an AI accelerator. Elsewhere, the PS5 Pro has a detachable disc drive and 1TB of storage.

Of course, Sony has its own model when it comes to releasing a Pro version of its consoles. For example, the PS4 Pro was launched in November 2016, three years after the PS4 was released.
