You may have heard: Although Larian hasn't finished updating Baldur's Gate 3, the studio's next game won't be Baldur's Gate 4 or anything D&D related.
But while studio founder and president Soen Finke mentioned that the team was working on “something new” in his entertaining open talk at GDC, it wasn't entirely clear what “new” meant. Speaking with Eurogamer during the event, Finke explained more details. The next thing will be “new in the sense that it's different from things we've done before.”
“It will still be familiar enough, but different,” he said, while “the tone, the style, the way of doing it, is definitely new for us — and I think it’s very attractive. I would love to actually talk about it — because ‘I’m so passionate about it — but I can’t To say more. But it is new in that sense.”
Finke also clarified what appears to be a simple misunderstanding about the overall size of the game, but that can be determined. During the week Finke was quoted as saying that the next game the studio is working on will “dwarf” it. This doesn't quite match what he meant.
“Did I really say it that way? I think I was misquoted on this matter,” he said. “I saw it pass by and I said, ‘I need to check what I actually said,’ because I was feeling really jet-lagged, or I either said it wrong, or…
“So, it's not a very big RPG that's going to dwarf them all, which we're making now – I mean, we have a couple, we have a couple of games we want to make – and [that] We had already planned after making BG3, so we're just back on that path now. They are big and ambitious, that's for sure. But I mean, I think in terms of scope, BG3 is probably good enough already!”
Vincke was also one of several developers to come out with strongly worded statements about the industry's ongoing struggle with layoffs, with Larion's boss citing the publisher's “greed” as the reason. Vincke also clarified this with Eurogamer during our chat at GDC – and we expect more from that chat very soon.
