It’s not him legend– The great performance that the fans were hoping for.
Grammy Award-winning singer John Legend disappointed fans with his underwhelming performance of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night.
Legend, 45, took the stage alongside musician Sheila E. moments before Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz delivered his first major address to voters at the United Center.
However, Legend’s rendition of the ’80s hit wasn’t all that impressive, with some fans of the late artist’s “Purple Rain” quickly letting their opinions be heard on social media.
“Who decided John Legend was the perfect choice to perform ‘Let’s Go Crazy’? Don’t do that shit again. Sheila E. and that guitarist alone were awesome!” one X user wrote.
“I don’t want to hear John Legend sing Prince songs,” another wrote.
“Why would they choose @johnlegend to do a Prince song? He can’t play notes and has no rhythm. What an insult to Prince’s legacy. Honestly people, leave him alone. Have some respect for him,” one angry Prince fan wrote.
“Prince in heaven watching John Legend honor him,” another posted, sharing a GIF of Logan Roy from HBO’s “Succession” looking unimpressed.
“Let’s Go Crazy” was a hit single from Prince and The Revolution’s 1984 album “Purple Rain”, and is considered one of the musician’s most successful songs – spending two weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Prince, a beloved son of Minnesota, was born and raised in the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes. The award-winning singer died in his home state in 2016.
Sheila E., a 66-year-old California singer and drummer, is a longtime friend and collaborator of Prince.
Legend has been a prominent supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Walz in their bids for the White House.
Hours before his performance on stage, the “All of Me” singer described Harris as a “smart, charismatic, compassionate” choice who was more than qualified to be commander-in-chief.
“She is fully qualified to be president” Legend He told CBS Mornings,.
“She also has the right personality traits that I think make her a great president, which is that she cares about people’s lives, she wants government to work for people and improve their lives,” he added.
Legend was among several high-profile artists — including Patti LaBelle, Jason Isbell, Mickey Jetton, and Little John — who performed at the Democratic National Convention.
“Travel junkie. Coffee lover. Incurable social media evangelist. Zombie maven.”
