Jeremy Renner proudly wears his scars from a traumatic snowfall accident more than a year ago that nearly cost him his life.

The “Mayor of Kingstown” star showed off his recovery efforts and appeared shirtless on the cover of the magazine Men’s health July/August issue. Returning to work on the third season of the popular series a year after the accident was by no means easy, but Renner is committed to himself, the crew and the fans of the show.

“Four months of abuse,” Renner said of his workouts with personal trainer Cat Cantela. “Physically, mentally and emotionally. But I feel good and look great!”

Renner began rehab at home before returning to Pittsburgh to film Kingstown, but admitted he was barely prepared for the first day of filming in a cemetery where temperatures never reached above 40 degrees.

“I was so fragile when we started on January 8th,” Renner said. “We were walking on ice, and I had no energy.” “I was falling asleep. But I think it’s going to be the best season yet because of it. Don’t get me wrong, Mike is still Mike — he’s still the guy you want as your boyfriend. But he’s more emotional, because ’cause I’m more emotional.”

Renner almost quit the show at one point due to his mental blockage, and said he had no interest in working on any “fancy” shows.

“Because, buddy, the last thing I wanted to do — to be honest with you, I almost stopped filming and do this show — was a fantasy,” he said. “Like, ‘Oh, wait, I don’t care about fantasy!'” Bulls—Words, Bulls—Stories, Bulls—Personality, all of this Bulls—I gotta live in the real reality here, ’cause these bones and these joints– And I gotta say fake lines and fake words and pretend to be…what I don’t have time to pretend, man!”

He added, “So that’s how I changed it, because I only have control over my point of view: I’m coming to Pittsburgh to recover in my body and get better every day, and I’m going to do this show on the side instead of it being the other way around.”

On January 1, 2023, Renner was airlifted to the hospital after being run over by his snowcat while trying to pull out a vehicle stuck in the snow near his home in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. He suffered more than 30 broken bones, severe chest injuries and orthopedic injuries.

A huge snowstorm the night before had left several vehicles stranded, and Renner attempted to move one vehicle out of his driveway using PistenBully. He successfully got the car moving, got out of the PistenBully and was talking to a family member when the snowplow unexpectedly started rolling.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Department officials responded to the bloody scene, reported by a neighbor just before 9 a.m., and Renner was trying to help. His nephew, Alex Fries, Move the truck that was stuck in the snow. Renner got out of the snowplow to check on his nephew, but it kept moving, so he jumped back in to stop the snowplow only to get stuck in the tread.

After Renner was taken away from the scene, a paramedic was heard saying: “I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

“What a disaster, dude,” Renner told Men’s Health of his recovery. “Showering, going to the bathroom – everything was a disaster.”

He added: “They give you medication so you don’t go to the bathroom, you get constipated. You pee in a bowl. It was terrible. Then you know things aren’t going well – you pee in a plastic jug, and it took me 17 minutes to get out of bed.”

Following the accident and his release from the hospital, the “Hawkeye” star kept his fans updated on his developments via social media.

“There are so many people who love me. I had no idea,” Renner told Men’s Health magazine. “I had to learn how to receive all this love, and it’s not easy. Even from people you don’t even know.

“Why is this incident such a thing? But then I said, ‘T—, stop asking why. Just pick it up. ‘I was famous for having a bow and arrow, and now I’m famous for conquering something like a man.’
