Is Blackpink’s “Born Pink” an English album? Billboard causes confusion ⋆ K-Choice

With the greatest competition in K-pop, fans of individual groups compete for success and recognition around the world.

It’s clear how proud BLACKPINK was to become the first K-pop girl group to sell 2 million albums and top the Billboard 200 with “Born Pink.”

However, now other K-pop fans are ignoring their rating, causing the Internet to be confused by Billboard rating “Born Pink” as an English album and not a Korean album.

Every week, Billboard updates its World Albums chart to show which 15 international albums – not counting UK/US releases – are currently the most popular based on sales, streams and other metrics.

In fact, this week, NCT 127’s latest album 2 Baddies rose to #1 for the first time this week. Along with that, other K-Pop albums from previous weeks that made it twice between 1&2 on this week’s chart include Proof by BTS and Report by ENHYPEN: Day 1.

However, the strangely missing album from the World Albums Chart this week is BLACKPINK’s new album, Born Pink.

It certainly wasn’t because the album, which left fans so confused, didn’t do well enough to make the charts. After all, BLACKPINK is currently #1 on the Artist 100 chart, and “Shutdown” and “Pink Venom” are currently #1 and #2 on the Billboard Global 200 chart, respectively.

This led some to believe that Billboard considered Born Pink an English album, which would make it ineligible for the World Albums chart.

Of the eight songs on the album, four – “Typa Girl”, “Hard to Love”, “The Happiest Girl” and “Daily” – are in English, meaning that it is not the majority, but rather half of the lyrics on Born Pink. The fact that Korean is not a “dominant” language has led some fans to believe that it may have become an “English” album by Billboard standards.

Yet Blackpink’s album “Ice Cream” contained three English songs, mostly in English, and reached No. 1 on the Billboard World Albums chart. Fans suspect that Born Pink’s total percentage of all English lyrics may be higher than The Album’s, but that’s just a theory at this point.

People can’t understand the logic behind how Billboard works.
