Jalen Hood-Scheveno sinks clutch 3 for Indiana

Jalen Hood Chevino buries a big three-pointer as the shot clock draws to a close for Indiana.

A projected lottery pick, freshman guard Jalen Hood-Chevino at Indiana State will forgo his remaining college eligibility and enter the 2023 NBA draft, he told ESPN Friday morning.

“For me, it’s about time,” Hood Scheveno told ESPN. “This has been my dream since I was a little kid.”

Hood-Schifino, the 13th overall in the NBA draft according to ESPN, was voted Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-Big Ten after averaging 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

“My freshman season has been amazing,” said Hood-Chevino, who is 6-foot-5 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan. “My coaches kept their word by having absolute confidence in me as a freshman. We didn’t win a national championship, but overall the season was a success and experiencing March Madness was a surreal moment.”

Although he was not initially projected as a well-defined player, Hood Scheveno emerged as a top 10 prospect based largely on his productivity and influence as the Hoosiers won.

In mid-December, Hood-Schifino was asked to step in in a senior role on a team losing starting quarterback Xavier Johnson to a season-ending injury. After a turbulent start, Hood-Schifino grabbed the guard position and helped lead to Indiana’s winning 11 of their last 15 regular season games, a third-place finish in the Big Ten and a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Tournament.

“NBA teams have been able to see that I can take over a game, create my own shot, run a team, that I have a high IQ, that I’m strong, that I have a unique speed in my game,” said Scheveno. “I look forward to showing NBA teams my body measurements match what’s on paper, my athletic performance, and my shooting abilities.”

Hood-Schifino fits the NBA prototype as a master ball guard with versatile shot-making prowess, direct dribbling creativity and defensive toughness.

The NBA draft is set for May 15-21 in Chicago, and the draft will be on June 22 in New York.
