“Ignorance is the mother of all evils,” said François Rabelais. At the eponymous high school, in Saint-Brieuc, several classes, from second to final year, had very few English lessons from the beginning of the school year because their teacher could not be replaced. “Since September, we have counted 87.5 hours that have not been changed,” underscores Maider Loisil, representative of the National Councils of Parents (FCPE) of Rabelais High School. This is a worrying situation for high school students: they are not making progress and they need grades for ParcourSup. »
“Exceptional Circumstances”
Two second year classes, two groups of general first year students and one STMG final year group are affected by this absence. In a letter sent to the Rectorate in Rennes, dated Tuesday April 9, the FCPE warns: “How can we evaluate first-year students? […] How can second-year students emulate the teaching of foreign languages, literature and civilization in their first year? »
Here it is much easier to find a replacement for a longer term than two weeks, three weeks
“Overall, we are doing well at Rabelais High School, which is an exceptional situation,” continues Maider Loisil. But it gets really complicated. Our complaints do not concern the professor in any way, we are asking him to change. »
English is hard to change
For its part, the high school administration confirms the number of unchanged hours indicated by the FCPE. “Priority recruiting is related to chronic absences,” notes the high school principal. Maternity leave, for example, is easy to change. » In this author's case, it is a question of “permanent” stops, that is, let's say, a series of several diseased leaves.
“It's much easier to find a replacement here for a longer period of time than it is for two weeks, three weeks,” he explains. The rectory cannot consider this absence as a priority because there are already long stops. We have departments in which it is very difficult to find people, and English is one of them,” says the head of the establishment.
No grades in 3rd quarter
Seconds and the first have some references in the first and second trimesters. The main difficulty concerns final year students, there are no assessments in the third term, although this is decisive for Parcoursup.
“This is the first time because this situation is linked to the place of undergraduate reform and continuous assessment,” the chancellor points out. We wait until the vacation is over to see if the teacher is on leave or not. We will ensure that the students have marks based on the subjects they have taught. »
The rectorate assures that, for its part, “the rector's office has not been informed of the situation at this stage. It commits us to support the institution to compensate the students. » The examination service has also been alerted.
