US auto safety regulators are investigating the Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric SUV after 30 complaints were sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about reports of power loss.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is investigating the matter power loss issue Covering model year 2022 Hyundai IONQ 5 electric SUVs.

The department says many consumers have reported a “loud popping noise followed by a warning displayed in their dashboard and immediately experiencing a loss of motive power that ranges from a reduction to a complete loss of motive force.”

Since then, Hyundai has told NHTSA investigators that the power loss issues are related to the Integrated Charge Control Unit (ICCU) that powers the EV’s batteries.

ODI’s initial review suggests that when an ICCU receives too much current, it can damage transistors, resulting in an inability to charge a 12-volt battery.

The department says it is opening the initial evaluation to determine the scope and severity of the potential problem.

During the evaluation, the agency will collect data on complaints while the manufacturer may also submit materials.

Hyundai said it is fully cooperating with the investigation a permit Monday, explaining that it will launch a service campaign next month that will update the software of damaged vehicles and replace the intensive care unit if necessary.

The ODI has initiated several interviews confirming various power loss issues, however none of the reports have been linked to any accidents or injuries.

IONIQ 5 is Hyundai’s first dedicated electric vehicle. Based on the E-GMP platform, the IONIQ 5 offers up to 303 EPA-rated ranges, starting at $41,450.

Hyundai sold more than 10,500 IONIQ 5 models (as of May 31, 2023) this year as it works toward its goal of becoming the top three global producers of electric vehicles by 2030.

Once the evaluation is complete, NHTSA can either close the investigation or move on to the next phase. The investigation extends to 39559 IONIQ 5 models. We will keep you posted on the situation as soon as more information is released.
