PARK CITY, Utah — Gwyneth Paltrow arrived at the Utah courthouse on Tuesday where opening statements were scheduled to begin in the civil trial over a 2016 skiing accident.
The actress and health and fitness expert walked into Park City Court with a bodyguard just after 8am local time while she was getting ready. Confrontation with Dr. Terry Sandersonwho sued her in 2019 alleging she ran into him after she skateboarded recklessly and left him with a traumatic brain injury.
Paltrow disagreed with Sanderson, saying it was a retired ophthalmologist who bumped into her at Deer Valley Resort. She also objects to his central claim that she did A “hit and run” He fled after the accident.
Opening statements from both sides will be made Tuesday to the eight-count jury and two alternates, most of whom raised their hands during the selection process when the judge asked them if they knew who Paltrow was.
Sources close to the Goop founder told The Post that Paltrow plans to take a stand in her own defense.
While Sanderson claims the event left him with a concussion, broken ribs, and permanent brain damage, Paltrow’s attorneys have told an almost exact opposite story.
Paltrow claims Sanderson was on top of her on the cliffs when he collided with her, dealing a “full-body blow” to the Oscar-winning actress. Her lawyers also claim that Sanderson admitted to being partially blind before the accident and had 15 pre-existing conditions before he bumped into their famous client.
The “Shakespeare in Love” star also says she didn’t run away afterward because she was upset at Sanderson for storming out and told him so.
Sanderson was originally seeking $3.1 million in damages, but the judge ruled that he was not entitled to punitive damages, and reduced the amount he was allowed to claim by more than 90% to $300,000.
In her counterclaim, Paltrow is only seeking $1 in damages and payment of her legal fees.
