Greta Gerwig had a clear vision of the story she wanted to tell Barbie She rejected the idea of cutting a scene with Margot Robbie and an older woman on a bench.
When Barbie moves into the real world, she encounters an older woman sitting on a bench. While the women exchange glances, Barbie compliments the older woman, telling her that she is beautiful. When it came time to edit the film, Gerwig was pressured to cut that particular scene from the final cut but ultimately chose to keep it.
“I love that scene so much,” said Gerwig. Rolling Stone. The oldest woman on the bench is fashion designer Ann Roth. It’s a legend. It’s a dead end for a moment, in a way – it leads nowhere. And in early cuts, looking at the film, it was suggested, “Well, you can cut it. And actually, the story would go the same way. And I said, ‘If you cut the scene, I don’t know what that movie is. ‘”
Gerwig said she saw the scene as a “key moment” in Barbie’s Journey, adding, “For me, that’s the heart of the movie. The way Margot plays that moment is so sweet and non-forced. There are more disgraceful elements in the movie that people say, ‘Oh, my God, I can’t believe Mattel lets you do that,’ or, ‘I can’t believe Warner Bros. let you do that.'” But for me, the part I can’t believe remains in the movie is this little dead end that leads nowhere — except that The heart of the movie.
