Figma disables AI design feature that appears to copy Apple’s Weather app

Make Design is available within Figma and will create layouts and UI components through text prompts. “Just describe what you need, and it will provide you with a rough draft,” the company explained when launching the feature.

The idea was that developers could use this feature to help quickly jot down their ideas to start exploring different design directions and then arrive at a solution faster, Figma said.

The feature was introduced in Figma’s Config conference last weekwhere the company explained that it did not receive training on Figma content, community files, or app designs, as Field points out in his response to X.

“In other words, the accusations about data training in this tweet are false,” he added.

But in the rush to launch new AI features to stay competitive, the quality assurance work that should accompany new additions seems to have been neglected.

Mirroring complaints in other industries, some designers immediately claimed that Figma’s AI tools, such as Make Design, It will eliminate jobs. Allen Discovery Figma seems to be essentially copying other applications which has led to increased concern among the design community.

“Just a reminder to any designer using the new Make Designs feature that they may want to carefully check existing applications or modify the results significantly so as not to unknowingly get themselves into legal trouble,” Allen warned others on X.

Field responded by explaining that Make Design uses large, off-the-shelf language models, along with “the systems that we’ve been tasked with using those models.” The problem with this approach, he said, is that the variance is very low.

“Within hours of seeing [Allen’s] “In a tweet, we identified the issue, which was related to the underlying design systems that were being created,” Field wrote on X. “Ultimately, my mistake was not insisting on a better quality assurance process for this work and pushing our team harder to meet the build deadline.”

Apple was not immediately available for comment. Figma referred to Field’s tweets as its statement on the matter.

Field says Figma will temporarily disable the Make Design feature until the team is sure it can “get behind the production.” The feature will be disabled starting Tuesday and won’t be re-enabled until Figma completes the full quality assurance process for the feature’s design platform.
