Tim Kaine, the original creator of Fallout, has been talking about possibly returning to the RPG series, and it all boils down to one basic requirement that has nothing to do with money or power. Rather, he says it would be a “personal question” as to whether the virtual game would be different enough to interest him.
In addition to being the series creator, Kane was a designer on Fallout 1 and 2, but he wasn’t involved in the later installments of the RPG series. He clearly realizes there’s a lot of interest in seeing him return to it, as he now has an entire video on his YouTube channel discussing exactly that. The short answer is: maybeBut it will depend on whether the game plans will be significantly different.
“Every RPG I made offered me something new and different that kept me interested in making it,” Ken begins. “It had nothing to do with money or power or role in the game, but rather the game itself was offering me something interesting that made me say, ‘Oh, I want to do that, I’ve never done that before.’”
Speaking specifically of Fallout, Cain emphasizes that he wants to apply the same condition there. “If someone comes to me and says, ‘Do you want to make a Fallout game?’, my response is, ‘What’s new?’” he says. “I didn’t even want to make Fallout 2, so why would I want to make a new Fallout game? What’s special about it?”
He continues: “You’re not asking me a question about money, you’re not asking me a question about power and authority, you’re asking me a personal question that has a personal answer. Which is, would this be something I want?” Would he be interested in doing it, because it’s different?”
In general, Cain reveals that people “contacted him” about the pandemic and asked if he would like to direct their games, but he ended up turning them down, regardless of what position he would be given on the project. Since “I’ve been there, done that, there’s nothing new with me.”
As for what would be considered “different” enough, Cain says that if he were asked to return to a new Fallout game where the draw was “maybe we put in a new feature,” then “I’m probably not interested.”
So, whether that day will come or not is another matter. Currently, Bethesda has confirmed this Fallout 5 It would be something, but we haven’t seen anything like that. But this is not surprising, as it has been previously confirmed that It will come after The Elder Scrolls 6which despite getting a trailer six years ago, hasn’t been seen since. With that in mind, it looks like we’re still waiting a long time for the next post-nuclear war RPG, so we’ll have to wait for now.
