We continue our retrospective of the exciting 2021/2022 EPCR Challenge Cup season, with a focus on the semi-finals, where Lyon and RC Toulon ended the Englishmen’s hopes of winning and secured their places in the final after respective home victories over Wasps. Saracens.
First European final for Lyon
LOU reached their first ever European final by defeating Wasps in the semi-finals of the EPCR Challenge Cup (20-18) at the Matmut Stadium in Gerland. Leo Perdeau scored one of the tries of the 2021/2022 EPCR Challenge Cup campaign for a total of 15 points. Substitute Yannis Sarkochet also crossed the line for Rhone. Dan Robson and Jimmy Goberth signed tries for Wasps. Goberth, 38, added eight more points for Lee Blackett’s men.
Villiers stun Saracens
RC Toulon reached the EPCR Challenge Cup final against Lyon thanks to two tries from Gabin Villiers that sealed War Club’s victory over Saracens at the Stade Félix Mayol (25-16). A brilliant double from Villiers and a solo effort from Giuda Vinicolo, in addition to Luis Carbonell’s 10 points at the foot, allowed the Varois to emerge victorious from this clash between two of the three European champions. Saracens went to Toulon in-goal through Ben Earl while Owen Farrell kicked 11 points.
