The gesture sparked controversy on social media and in English newspapers. The Three Lions striker posted a message to explain himself: “It was a private joke with friends in the stands. Nothing but disrespect for Slovakia”, we read. UEFA later said “an ethics and disciplinary inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation into possible breaches of the basic rules of ethical behaviour”.

According to Build, the European Football Association would not have sanctioned the player sportingly. However, he was fined for this action. So England star in the quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday 6th July. A significant asset for the Three Lions.
