In 2020, Epic Games went public for the first time. Nearly three years later, gamers are still waiting for the technology to go mainstream. Separately, Epic showed off some of the improvements coming to Unreal Engine 5.2 with a demo that features, of all things, a digital recreation of an electric truck. EV turns out to be the ideal interface for the UE 5’s new substrate shader system. This technology allows artists to create and layer different shaders as they see fit. In the demo, I gave the Epic R1T an opal body to show how a substrate can allow layers of different materials to interact with each other without creating lighting elements. The demo was also a showcase for Epic’s new suite of procedural content creation tools. It allows artists to create expanded and highly detailed levels from a small selection of handcrafted assets.
If all goes according to plan, it shouldn’t be long before the first slate of Unreal Engine 5 games arrives. Provided it’s not too late again, It is scheduled to be released this year.
