If you need to talk to someone who speaks a foreign language, translate the menu, translate the dialog or command in another language, Google will help you with two different applications available on iOS and Android devices.
The Google Translate application translates into dozens of languages, either text or voice; Type, write or speak in the app. It also allows you to point your smartphone at a panel or menu written in a foreign language to display a live translation.
Google Assistant Interpreter mode can provide real-time translations that allow you to continue conversations with someone while speaking different languages. After asking Google to help you with a specific language, the assistant will automatically translate your words so that you can continue the broken conversation with the person you are speaking to.
Google Translate
Google Translate works on iOS and Android devices; iPhone and iPad users can download it from the Applet’s App Store, while Android users can download it from Google Play. Both versions offer approximately the same functionality.
Translate typed text into more than 100 different languages, view image translation in approximately 90 languages, translate bilingual dialogues in 43 languages on the fly, and draw text to translate into 95 languages. Offline translations are also available for many languages, and you can store translated words and phrases for later use.
In addition to English, languages like French, Italian, German, Spanish, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Arabic, Russian, Hebrew and Yiddish are small samples of the many languages supported by the app.
Translate the text
Suppose you want an Italian translation of an English sentence. Touch the name of the current language at the top left of the screen and select English as the source language. Tap the language name at the top right of the screen and select Italian as the target language. Then tap the Say field Tap to enter text Type the English word or phrase you want to translate.
You can tap the stylus and write an English sentence based on the letters with your finger or pen. When you type or write letters on the screen, the app tries to fully predict what you will write by displaying possible word and character combinations. Keep writing or select one of the recommended words if it matches the words you intend to type. At one point, the apps may suggest the entire sentence you want to type. If so, select the phrase.
In return, Google Translate displays the word or phrase in the target language. Tap the right arrow next to the translation, then tap the speaker icon next to the phrase in both languages to hear it out loud.
Touch the copy icon to copy the translation and the three-dot icon to share it, watch full screen, start the conversation, or turn the translation upside down.
Translate images
Another great feature is the ability to translate text into an image with your phone’s camera. Select the source language and target language and tap the camera icon. Show your device’s camera on the sign, menu or document written in the source language.
Google Translate provides direct translations, but some languages require a downloadable language package. Once the application has time to identify the text, it can be translated into the target language and viewed directly on the screen.
Press the scan icon to scan the image; Tap on each text item to see the translation. Touch the import icon to translate the photo you already took on your mobile. You can also use the shutter button on your device and the apps will ask you to highlight the text to be translated.
Translate the speech
You can speak one language and the apps will translate what you say into another language. Tap the microphone icon at the top of the screen and speak your word or phrase in the app. Google Translate will translate your words into the target language. Tap the speaker icon to hear the translation.
Another option is to tap the transcript icon and then start talking. Tap the microphone icon when done. You can select and copy the transcript to paste elsewhere.
Real-time conversations
Apps allow you to communicate normally with someone, even if you do not speak the same language. Select both languages and tap the dialog icon. You can continue the conversation manually or automatically.
If you select the manual mode, you should touch the language icon of the current speaker. If you go to automatic mode by tapping the auto icon, Google will determine who speaks the language.
Help Google
Google Assistant is already installed on most Android devices, but you can get it from Google Play if needed. To use it on iPhone, download and install the app from the following App Store.
The guide’s translator mode supports 44 different languages, including English, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.
Translator mode is also available on Google Home speakers, some cell phones and some laptops. Smart speakers and some smart watches with built-in Google Assistant.
Translate conversations
To get started, launch Google Assistant on your device and let Google know which language you would like to use. You can create your order in different ways, for example:
- “Hey Google, be my translator in Spanish. “
- “Ok Google, help me speak French. “
- “Ok Google, translator from English to Russian. “
- “Hi Google, Japanese translator. “
- “Ok Google, enable translator mode. “
If you ask Google to enable translator mode, the assistant will detect your own language and then ask which language you would like to use to explain it. After the feature starts, tap the microphone icon and say something in your own language. Google displays and pronounces the description in another language.
You can hand over the device to the person you want to chat with, and when he or she speaks their language, Google will translate it. Apps will display and pronounce its sentence in the language you set up. Continue this way to automatically have a two-way conversation with the other party.
Manual translation
By default, the wizard will automatically detect the spoken language and translate it into your preferred language. This should work fine most of the time, but if the feature stumbles, you can switch to manual mode.
Tap the manual entry at the bottom of the screen. Touch the microphone icon for your own language while speaking, and touch the other language icon when others want to speak.
Keyboard translation
You can also use your keyboard to translate between languages. This can be useful if you and other parties are watching your mobile or need a translation other than live chat.
Before using this option, you may need to install a keyboard for some languages. To do this on an Android mobile, go to Settings and find the option for keyboards or languages. There should be an option that allows you to add new languages to the menu, then select the language you want from the list.
On iPhone or iPad, navigate Settings & gt; General & gt; Keyboard & gt; Keyboards. Tap Add a new keyboardSelect the language and tap Done.
To access the keyboard function, tap the keyboard below, then tap the blue keyboard icon to select your language. Type your message and the translation will appear below. You can tap the speaker icon to hear the translation aloud, or use the copy icon to paste the translation elsewhere.
Tap the green keyboard icon to set another person’s language, then tap the icon needed to change your keyboard to their language. Another person can type the answer using the new keyboard. When you have finished translator mode, press the X button on the top right or say “Stop”.
