The Toronto Blue Jays And the Colorado Rockies They agreed to swap outside players. Rocky are taking Randall Grechuk While the Blue Jays are getting it Rimmel Tapia. Teenage detective Adrian Pinto also moves from the Rockies to Blue Jays in the deal while Jays sends some money to the Rockies, The teams announced Thursday.
Apparently Tapia found out when others found out, too.
Tapia, 28, hit .273/ .327/ .372 (80 OPS +) with 26 doubles, triples, six eyebrows, 50 RBI, 69 runs, 20 steals and 1.0 WAR in 133 Rookie games last season. He’s mostly played left field in his career, but was set to play right for the Rockies and that’s where Grichuk will likely take over with the Blue Jays.
Of course, the Blue Jays can also play Teoscar Hernández on the right field, which will unlock the designated hitter at bat for someone not previously identified as a novice (Alejandro Kirk or Greg Bird?).
Grichuk, 30, hit .241/.281/.423 (89 OPS+) with 25 Doubles, 22 Homers, 81 RBI, 59 points and 0.8 WAR for the Blue Jays in 149 games last season. It will probably just slip into the right field.
Being this late in spring training, seeing a swap like this is pretty surprising. Perhaps there were more movements in the work of the Blue Jays.
We know that Grichuk is set to make over $10 million in 2022 and 2023 before hitting free agency. Tapia is set to make $3.95 million this season and has another year of judging before hitting free agency. The Blue Jays have sent some money to The Rockies, but it’s possible this is at least in part to save you some money while looking to increase franchise resources elsewhere.
As for Bento, the 19-year-old Venezuelan is in second place, a short and off-court player. He hit .360/.487/.543 with 41 bases stolen in 54 games in the Dominican Summer League last season, his first in professional baseball. There’s a lot going for it here and Blue Jays are adding it to the organization.
The Blue Jays went 91-71 last season, missed the playoffs by one game, and were aggressive in the off season as they pressed for a return to the playoffs. Here’s CBS Sports’ full Blue Jays preview.
