We're less than a month away from the return of Lara Croft's classic adventures, and publisher Aspyr has delivered on its latest promise to bring us some much-needed news before Tomb Raider I-III Remastered releases on February 14.
Although there's no gameplay to show for it, Aspyr has detailed a number of features that will be included in the package later playstation.blog. Aspyr has detailed its history with Lara Croft, publishing older titles on Macintosh computers until 2003. While Lara has gone through some significant changes over the years, the developer wanted new fans to be able to go back and re-experience the classics, so it teamed up with Crystal Dynamics.
Both teams focused on what Asper calls the “three Cs”: engineering, gameplay, and art. We'll give you a brief summary of all the additions to the games below, but let's start with some of the highlights. This will apply to all three games in the bundle, which includes: Tomb Raider I + Unfinished Business Expansion, Tomb Raider II + Golden Mask ExpansionAnd Tomb Raider III + Lost Artifacts Expansion.
First, the controls. If you grew up playing video games in the '90s, you probably played more than a few games that used “tank controls,” where movement is tied to character position rather than camera position. In the remastered version, you can switch between the classic control system and “modern controls”, inspired by the series' legendary, anniversary and underworld era.
Another big update is the health bars for bosses. In the original PlayStation games, you won't know how much health a boss has left until you defeat him and he collapses to the ground. Now, all bosses have a visible health bar, which should help you decide which weapons to use.
Of course, it wouldn't be a new release without the photo mode now, right? This allows you to freeze gameplay at any time, switch between classic and modern visuals while taking shots, and capture any special moments you encounter during your playthroughs.
With these details, let's review some of the other updates confirmed by Aspyr:
- Baked and real-time lighting effects
- Switch graphics – even in photo mode
- All-new Lara Croft character model
- Adjustments to animation, textures and visual effects
- New models, environments and enemies to match the latest style
- Item sprites have been replaced with 3D models
Pre-orders for Tomb Raider 1-III Remastered are available now on the Nintendo Switch eShop on both platforms Europe And north americaYou will get a 10% discount if you pre-order the game before February 15.
In a separate tweet, Nintendo of America showed off two brand new costumes that you'll be able to unlock in the games as well – the Antarctic and the Wetsuit.
That's a lot of information for three beloved classics, and they seem to be getting the attention they deserve, too. Of course, we'll reserve judgment until we get the set in our hands, but we're excited to revisit these staple toys from our childhood. Maybe we'll get more gameplay before the game launches next month.
