Apple moved the End Call button on the iPhone to the center in the latest beta

Apple moved the end call button back to the middle of the screen in the latest iOS 17 upgrade released on Tuesday.

The move reflects a change Apple has been considering over the summer, as CNBC reported last week.

Previous betas of iOS 17 moved the red End Connection button to the lower-right corner, instead of centered on the bottom half of the screen, where it was for years. However, in the latest developer beta, the red hang up button is vertically centered, in the middle of three buttons near the bottom of the screen.

The potential change to Apple’s user interface is not yet final and is only visible in the latest Apple developer beta at the moment. Apple’s developer programs and public beta programs are designed for software makers and early adopters to test and find bugs in the new iPhone operating system before it’s officially released in the fall alongside new iPhones.

Apple’s End Call button has been in roughly the same place for years. But in the latest version, it’s revamping its Contact ID functionality, with a new feature called “Contact Stickers,” which lets users choose which photo appears when contacting another iPhone user. New photos take up most of the screen during a phone call, so Apple has moved the buttons to the bottom.

In the summer of 2021, Apple considered a change similar to Safari moving the URL bar to the bottom of the page, which is more comfortable for most people with larger screens. But Apple backtracked on some of the planned changes and gave users the option to move the URL bar to the top of the page before the official software release. Apple has also moved to where push notifications appear at the bottom of the iPhone screen in recent years.
